Live Up to Your Own Hype!

When we hear the word hype, we usually think of sports, entertainment, or social media.

The rookie everyone says will become a superstar.

The singer with a chart-topping album before anyone has heard the second song. The CEO expected to transform an entire company.

Hype often carries a negative connotation. We assume it means exaggerated expectations that someone probably won’t meet.

But what if we’ve misunderstood it?
What if the real problem isn’t having too much hype? What if it’s having none?

Think about your own life for a moment. What do people expect from you? What are you known for?
When your name comes up in conversation, what do others assume you’ll do well?
If you can’t answer those questions, that should give you pause.

Every one of us should be building a reputation that creates positive expectations. That’s another way of describing healthy hype.

It isn’t about arrogance. It isn’t about self-promotion. It’s about consistently demonstrating qualities that people come to trust.

Maybe you’re the person who always keeps your word.
Maybe you’re known for solving difficult problems.
Maybe people expect you to remain calm during a crisis.
Maybe you’re the friend who never forgets a birthday or the leader who always treats people fairly.
That’s hype worth earning.

The word hype is believed to have developed as a shortened form of hyperbole – exaggerated claims or overstatement. Sometimes that’s exactly what it is.

But expectations themselves are not the enemy. Expectations are often the reward for repeated excellence.

The best athletes understand this. When fans expect greatness from them, it usually means they’ve earned that expectation through years of extraordinary performance.

Certainly there can be pressure that accompanies high expectations, but there is also honor. People believe you can deliver because you’ve shown them you can.

Why shouldn’t that be true of us?

Imagine becoming known as someone who always follows through. Someone who can be counted on. Someone who brings optimism instead of complaints. Someone who makes situations better simply by showing up.

That’s the kind of hype you should welcome.
Too many people drift through life without intentionally building any reputation at all.
They hope people notice them someday, yet they haven’t decided what they want to be known for.

Instead, ask yourself a better question:
What’s the hype about me?

If people were introducing you to someone important, what strengths would they mention first?
What qualities would they confidently predict you’ll demonstrate?
If the answer isn’t what you’d like it to be, that’s not discouraging. It’s an invitation.

You build healthy hype one decision at a time. One promise kept. One challenge accepted. One kind act. One disciplined morning. One excellent performance after another.

Eventually, people begin expecting your best because your best has become your pattern.
That’s a reputation really worth living up to.
