Reluctance – Out of Control!

Moving towards  UnReluctant Day, we’re getting more and deeper questions about reluctance.

This is because Reluctance is so common – and so deeply embedded in daily life – that most of it goes unnoticed.

Worse still, much of it goes unaddressed.

The true cost of reluctance is impossible to calculate. We can never fully know what opportunities were missed, what relationships might have deepened, what achievements could have been realized, or what joys were left unexplored because someone hesitated rather than acted.

Yet one of the most common observations we hear from people who participate in UnReluctance Day is:

“I had no idea how often I was being reluctant, how many things I was reluctant about, and what this reluctance was keeping me from.”

That realization alone can be transformative.

Most people think reluctance is simply caution. Sometimes it is. But more often, reluctance serves as a comfortable shield that protects us from emotions we would rather avoid.

In our experience, becoming UnReluctant often requires confronting one or more of the following:

  •    Uncertainty
  •    Vulnerability
  •    Accountability
  •    Possible loss
  •    Social judgment
  •    Change

These are powerful emotional barriers.

The purpose of identifying them is not to dramatize the process of becoming UnReluctant.
Rather, it is to help people anticipate what they may encounter when they decide to move forward.

When we understand what reluctance is protecting us from, we gain the ability to respond differently.

Instead of saying:
“I don’t feel like doing that.”

We can ask:
“What am I actually reluctant about?”

The answer is often revealing.

A postponed conversation may actually be fear of rejection.
A delayed decision may be fear of accountability.
A neglected opportunity may be fear of change.

The reluctance itself is rarely the real or primary issue. It is often merely the visible symptom of something deeper.

One of the most useful things a person can do is develop the habit of spotting reluctance in real time.

Notice when you hesitate.
Notice when you procrastinate.
Notice when you repeatedly tell yourself “later.”
Notice when you keep revisiting the same decision without acting.

Those moments are often clues.

Reluctance is not always wrong. Sometimes hesitation is wise. Sometimes waiting is prudent.

But many people have normalized reluctance so completely that they no longer recognize it.

And what remains unrecognized cannot be addressed.

The first step toward becoming UnReluctant is not courage.
It is awareness.

Once you begin noticing reluctance, you will see it everywhere.
And once you see it, you gain the opportunity to choose something different.

Aspire.
Be Less Reluctant.
