Reluctance Repellent
Make Sure You Have Sample!
Imagine if you could buy a spray called Reluctance Repellent™.
One quick spray before making a difficult phone call.
Another before introducing yourself to someone new.
A light mist before beginning that book, launching that business, asking for a raise, or finally taking the first step toward the life you’ve imagined. Wouldn’t it be wonderful?
When I promoted Un-Reluctant Day, I joked that I needed people to sign up early so I’d know how much Reluctance Repellent to order. The joke landed because everyone immediately understood the problem.
We all give in to reluctance.
Reluctance is one of life’s quietest obstacles. It rarely announces itself dramatically. Instead, it whispers:
“Maybe tomorrow.”
“I’m not quite ready.”
“What if this doesn’t work?”
“This feels uncomfortable.”
The tragedy is that reluctance often disguises itself as wisdom.
Sometimes we call it caution.
Sometimes preparation.
Sometimes waiting for better timing.
Occasionally those are legitimate reasons.
But far more often, they’re simply reluctance wearing a clever disguise.
The unfortunate thing about reluctance is that it compounds.
The reluctant phone call becomes the relationship that never develops.
The reluctant apology becomes years of unnecessary distance.
The reluctant application becomes the opportunity someone else receives.
The reluctant first step becomes another year wondering, “What if?”
Fortunately, there really is a reluctance repellent.
It isn’t sold in stores. It’s called effective action. Action is remarkably effective because reluctance feeds on imagination. Action feeds on reality.
Once you begin, your mind shifts from wondering to doing.
Momentum starts replacing hesitation.
Confidence begins replacing uncertainty.
Very few people become fearless before acting.
Most become less fearful because they acted.
Perhaps the most surprising discovery is that reluctance usually evaporates after the first few minutes.
The phone call wasn’t as difficult as expected.
The speech wasn’t as terrifying.
The workout became enjoyable.
The conversation became meaningful.
The project became exciting.
The monster that seemed enormous while standing outside the door shrinks dramatically once you’re inside the room.
Maybe we don’t need to eliminate reluctance completely.
Maybe we simply need enough Reluctance Repellent to get us moving.
One spray.
One step.
One decision.
One beginning.
That may be all it takes to discover that the life you’ve wanted has been waiting patiently on the other side of hesitation.
Aspire.
Be Less Reluctant.
